About Calgary

Calgary is the largest city in the Canadian province of Alberta, located about 80 kilometers from the Rocky Mountains. Calgary had a population of 1,239,220 at the 2016 census. It is therefore the third largest city in the country after Toronto and Montreal. The residents of Calgary are known as Calgarians. The city is a popular destination for winter sports enthusiasts due to the large number of ‘like holiday parks’ in the mountains. The city’s economy mainly consists of the petroleum industry, but agriculture, tourism and technology are also important. In 1988 Calgary hosted the Winter Olympics. Calgary’s nickname is Cowtown and the city’s symbol is a white cowboy hat, referring to Calgary’s old-west character.
